2. Taiji Breathing Techniques. In Taijiquan, you have to learn how to coordinate the movement of your abdomen with your breathing. You need to learn both the Buddhist normal abdominal breathing and the Daoist reverse abdominal breathing. Normal abdominal breathing helps the Taiji beginner relax and gain great health from practicing Taiji, while reverse abdominal breathing helps you to direct Qi to your extremities for martial purposes.
3. Basic Taiji Qigong. In Taijiquan, you must understand Qi and also feel it. This helps you to become aware of the inside of your body and your internal energetic state, and to start using Qi when you practice Taiji. You start with the first of four Taiji Qigong sets. Many of the basic Taiji forms are also used to train the coordination of the Yi (mind), the breathing, the body, and the Qi. Through this training, the student will build up a firm foundation for Taiji.
